Implant Dentistry - Dental Implants
Aptos, Watsonville, Capitola, and Santa Cruz, California Cosmetic Dentist
Dental implants provide a way for your implant dentist to restore missing teeth and to fill spaces between your teeth that may otherwise cause problems down the road for your gums and surrounding teeth. They are another way to improve your self-esteem and save you from that feeling of self-consciousness that comes from knowing people can see your missing teeth when you smile.
At Advanced Smile Designs in Santa Cruz County, California, we provide full mouth restoration services to our clients. However, we do not perform the surgical placement of dental implants, but we work closely with our periodontist or oral surgeon to achieve the highest quality results possible. Dental implants are fully-functional and highly aesthetic replacements for missing teeth, and ensuring the best results requires a team of specialists each working in their area of expertise. Santa Cruz Implant Dentist, Terry W. Forsberg, DDS, provides distinctive dentistry services which include placing teeth crowns on the dental implant.
How Dental Implants Are Placed
Dental implants are metal posts that are surgically placed into your jawbone. Once placed, the implants are allowed to "rest." They may be topped with a non-functional temporary crown. During the resting period, they fuse with the jawbone, becoming as strong, or stronger than your natural teeth. A restoration is placed on the top of the implant. If an individual tooth is being replaced, a crown is used, but if multiple teeth are being replaced, a bridge or fixed denture may be used. The artificial teeth are made of porcelain, which is matched to the shade of the patient's natural teeth.
Why Dental Implants May be Chosen
Dental implants are a viable option for patients who have lost teeth from decay and periodontal disease. Implants do not rely on support from surrounding teeth in order to be properly placed. Therefore they rely on their own structure and stability and the strength of the patient's jaw bone.
Dental implants are designed to look and feel like your own natural teeth. Once the metal post of the implant has fused with your jawbone, it helps prevent bone loss and gum recession.
Dental implants when securing fixed crowns, bridges or dentures will allow you to be confident in the fact that they will not slip during eating, speaking or smiling. They do not require glues or pastes to remain in their proper position.
