Tooth Bonding

California: Monterey, Salinas, Santa Cruz

Tooth Bonding The material used to make white fillings and to bond porcelain restorations is known as dental bonding. Dental bonding can also be used to reshape your teeth to improve their appearance or function. This type of procedure can be performed on one or more teeth at the same time.

Terry W. Forsberg, DDS is a highly skilled and caring cosmetic dentist who will take the time to discuss your needs and desires with you, as well as discuss the details of the treatment that he most recommends to suit your individual needs.

At Advanced Smile Designs of Aptos, California, our goal is to provide each and every one of our patients with a comfortable and friendly experience. Along with a highly trained and educated dentist and dental team, we are equipped with the latest techniques and most advanced technology in order to provide you with a positive experience while under our care.

The Art of Dental Bonding

The process of dental bonding is similar to the sculpting of clay in many aspects. The artistry behind the design is created through the molding and shaping of the composite resin. Through this process, Dr. Forsberg is able to perform any of the following procedures with precision and skill.

  • Make cosmetic improvements
  • Restore decaying teeth
  • Repair crooked teeth
  • Restore chipped teeth
  • Fill gaps between teeth
  • Restore broken teeth
  • Recolor teeth
  • Reshape teeth

Dental bonding can also be precisely matched to the color of your teeth so that the restorations blend naturally with your tooth material. Unlike porcelain restorations, though, dental bonding does not have the same translucency or surface luster as dental enamel, so it is generally used to correct problems in smaller, less noticeable areas.

How Dental Bonding Works

The treatment begins with the use of a mild etching solution to make the surface of your tooth enamel slightly rough. This allows the resin and bonding agent to adhere correctly to your tooth.

Next, a plastic material is applied to the surface of your tooth in a thin coating. The bonding material is then applied and Dr. Forsberg ensures that it is colored and sculpted to achieve your most desired results. After completing the design of your restored tooth, a high intensity light is used to harden the material and then your tooth is carefully polished.

A dental bonding procedure, when performed correctly, can last from 4-8 years depending on your oral hygiene and eating habits. The more you care for your teeth, the longer any dental work is going to last without needing repairs.

Dental bonding is a good, cost-effective treatment for some situations, but many people, especially if there are multiple teeth that need treatment or multiple dental issues, such as discoloration and chipping, will see better results with porcelain veneers.
