Dentures and Partials

California: Monterey, Salinas, Santa Cruz

Dentures and Partials If you have one or more missing teeth, there are many reasons to replace them, ranging from purely aesthetic to significant health concerns. Dentures can replace all upper or lower missing teeth, or replace a few teeth missing in the same area of the mouth. Dentures have a bad reputation, and they are perhaps not the best solution for missing teeth, but modern full and partial dentures can be comfortable, reliable, functional, and attractive.

Terry W. Forsberg, DDS, provides the latest in advanced cosmetic dentistry services at Advanced Smile Designs in Santa Cruz County, California. Here you will be involved in the entire procedure and treated like royalty from the time you enter our practice until the time you leave with your new dentures.

The Design of Dentures

Dentures are essentially artificial teeth fitted to a framework that resembles your natural gums. The denture is fabricated and designed from acrylic to match the proper color, size and shape that would look most natural for your facial appearance. The teeth and gums are molded and carefully designed to meet Dr. Forsberg's specifications. The base of the denture is also designed to match the dimensions measured from your own gums for a more comfortable and secure fit.

Types of Dentures

Dentures are classified as either full or partial dentures. Full dentures are placed when you are missing all of your upper or lower teeth. The reasons for your missing teeth can vary from periodontal disease, to trauma and genetics.

Partial dentures are placed when some teeth are missing, but not all of them. They are also a viable choice when your surrounding teeth are not strong enough to support a bridge.

Your dentures will be fitted to attach to your surrounding teeth with clasps, anchor to dental implants, or rest on your own gums. The best option for you will be determined by the health of your remaining teeth, your gums, and your jawbone.

Neuromuscular Dentures, unique to our office in mid county, re-establish proper facial length which gives the patient a younger facial profile and more aesthetic smile. We use a TENs unit to relax your facial muscles to find the most aesthetic and functional position for your teeth, jaws and muscles.

Adjusting to Your New Dentures

Once Dr. Forsberg has placed your new dentures and shown you how to care for them, it is up to you to adjust to having them in your mouth. This will take some time because they will feel strange to you at first. Full dentures feel completely different from your own teeth. But, once you have adjusted to them, they should function well and feel comfortable to you.

Dr. Forsberg will explain all of the adjustments you will want to make in order to quickly adapt to your new dentures. In time they will settle into a good fit with your gums and you will feel like a new person with a brand new and attractive smile.
