Sedation Dentistry Questions

Monterey, Salinas and Santa Cruz, California

Am I a good candidate for sedation dentistry?

If you have a fear of dentists due to past traumatic experiences, difficulty in getting numb for a procedure, very sensitive teeth, a fear of needles or complex problems that require extensive dental surgery, then you are likely a good candidate for sedation dentistry.

Sedation Dentistry Questions

What types of sedation dentistry are available?

At Advanced Smile Designs of Salinas, California we use nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and an oral sedation pill called Triazolam or Lorazepam. You will be conscious with both types of sedation, but you will remain very calm and relaxed throughout your entire procedure.

Will I feel pain during my procedure?

Sedation dentistry is a complement to anesthesia. With sedation dentistry, you will be extremely relaxed and have a much higher threshold for feeling pain. Our goal is to keep you pain free. Dr. Forsberg will administer local anesthetics at the beginning of your treatment and as needed during the procedure.

How long will I be under sedation?

The length of time you will be sedated depends on the type of procedure you are having performed. Minor work takes less time. Complex procedures and combined procedures require more time to complete. As a rule, you are sedated from 2-6 hours. For oral conscious sedation, you should count on having someone drive you to and from your appointment, plus, remain with you that day and evening. With nitrous oxide, you should recover quickly enough to be able to drive yourself home.

What are the benefits of choosing oral conscious sedation dentistry?

  • An IV is not necessary
  • You are only responsible for taking your initial pill 60 minutes before beginning your procedure and bringing any remaining pills with you to your appointment
  • Combined treatments can be performed with fewer appointments
  • You are monitored closely during your sedation with a pulse-oximeter
  • You are able to relax and comfortably have your dental work completed.
