Teeth Whitening Questions

Salinas, Santa Cruz and Monterey, California

What causes my teeth to become discolored and stained?

In most cases, the discoloration and stains on your teeth are the result of drinking wine, tea or coffee. Smoking can also stain your teeth due to the nicotine found in cigarettes. In some cases, too much fluoride or the antibiotic tetracycline can also cause discoloring of the teeth. Age can be a factor in teeth beginning to become discolored, and some people have whiter enamel than others.

Teeth Whitening Questions

What types of treatments can remove stains on my teeth?

There are many options available for providing teeth whitening treatments. To counteract discoloration or remove stains, you can use products like whitening toothpastes, over-the-counter tooth whitening treatments, and in-office treatments performed by Dr. Forsberg. Which type of treatment will best suit your needs should be determined during a consultation at our office.

How do whitening toothpastes work?

Whitening toothpastes often contain a combination of whitening chemicals and mild abrasives that help to remove staining properties from your tooth surfaces. These abrasives tend to wear away the enamel of your teeth, so they may not be the best choice for your needs.

What is the method for teeth whitening?

There are two main teeth whitening methods we use at Advanced Smile Designs. We use BriteSmile in-office whitening to dramatically improve the color of your teeth, and we offer Nite or Day White at-home teeth whitening kits that are custom-made for your mouth.

Do whitening treatments work on areas that have had prior dental work?

No. Any dental work that has already been done will not be affected by any whitening treatment. If you have had previous dental work, your teeth should be whitened to match your existing dental work. If you intend to have dental work performed, having tooth whitening performed first allows the restorations to be matched to your whitened teeth, so color matching can be maintained with proper upkeep.

Are there any side effects to tooth whitening procedures?

Any side effects caused by teeth whitening procedures are temporary. The main side effect is tooth sensitivity. If you are using an at-home whitening kit, you may experience gum irritation if your gums come in contact with the whitening compound.

In general, before choosing any tooth whitening procedure, you should consult with Dr. Forsberg to determine which method is healthiest and will best serve your needs and preferred results.
